A culturally conscious book that I found intersting is called Papa's Mark. This book is about a man's first time voting. His son is excited because his dad gets to vote for the first time, however, he is saddened by the fact that his dad does not know how to write. This little boy want his dad to be proud of who he is when he votes and in wanting this he teaches his dad to write his name. The lessons that can be used with this book are in Social Studies (voting rights past and present), Literature ( write in your journal as if you were Simm's dad and you are learning how to write), and Social Studies ( a time line on voting rights).

An interesting realistic fiction book is called What's Wrong with Timmy? This story is about a little girl named Kate who inquires about a little boy she sees in the park named Timmy who has a disability. With the help of her mother, she learns to understand the reasons why Timmy is so special and how even though he is different he has the same needs as any other human being. The lessons that can be used with this story are in Literature (friendship), Literature (Sequencing events, retelling the story in order that they think it happened), and Science (having children learn about genes and how they determine one's disabilities).

A great poetry is Autumnblings. This poetry book illustrates several poems that associate the changes in weather to the seasons. For example, in "BRRRRRRR" the author talks about how each month of autumn (October, November, and December) you see and feel different types of weather. the colder ther weather gets, the closer the next season of winter. the activities that can be used with this book are Science (affect of weather on enviornment), Literature (learn about weather and how it associates with each season), and Math (learn to measure the weather).

Another one of my favorite books is Officer Buckle and Gloria. This book informs about safety. When Officer Buckle attempts to give a speech on safety to his town school, everyone seems to fall asleep. When the police department partners him up with a dog named Gloria, they become a success at teaching about safety. This book goes great with Social Studies, Language Arts, and also Math.

One of the books that enjoyed reading was Amelia Bedelia Helps Out. This book is about Miss Emma who is in need of help in her garden so she ends up hiring Amelia Bedelia. Miss Emma gives Amelia directions on what she needs to be done and she does them with no compliants. The problem is that Amelia misinterprets the directions and ends up doing the total opposite of what she was asked to do. Amelia makes a teacake out of actual tea that turns out to be a total success. In the end Miss Emma was surprised by Amelia's work and was humored by all the events. This book can be used with Literature, Math, and Science.
